The Do’s and Don’ts of Snow Driving

So it’s cold and snowy, and you have to move or travel. Good times. You’ll be making multiple trips from the old place to the new place, visiting relatives, maybe even dropping a few items off in your storage unit. Wherever you’re going, it’s important your vehicle is prepared for safe winter travel. With that in mind, we present the do’s and don’ts of winter driving:

  • DON’T try to melt ice from your windshield by pouring hot water on it. Using hot water can crack the windshield

  • DO turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide until you gain control if you lose traction while driving on snowy or icy roads.

  • DO keep bottled water, food, extra cash and clothes/blankets in your car. Anyone who’s ever been stuck on a highway for hours can tell you how invaluable these items are.

  • DON’T forget to clean snow and ice off your headlights and tail lights as well. This seems obvious but it’s shocking how often people forget it

  • DO apply even pressure when braking in slick conditions if your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes. Keep in mind anti-lock brakes do not shorten stopping distance, but they do help you maintain control

  • DO put on snow tires if possible, or at least check your current ones. It’s recommended that you change your tires once they reach 4/32″ depth.

  • DO spend the extra money on higher quality windshield wipers. There is nothing more important (besides brakes) then being able to see out your window.

Those are the basics, but there’s plenty more you can do. You can never be too careful in the winter. Feel free to share any tips you might have in the comments below.
